Over and above these facets is Rex’s remarkable decision to present this “controversy” more or less in its entirety-the volume assembles documents that have never been assembled in this way before.
His edition of and commentary on the documents surrounding the second epistolary controversy of 1525–27 between Martin Luther and Henry VIII is an elegant and authoritative gem for a number of reasons: the precision of its illuminating bibliographic detail, the lucid prose of his compelling introduction and annotations, the easily accessed layout with the original Latin or German text facing an English translation, a most useful select bibliography, and both a general and a Scriptural index. The result-a chorus of voices-bears a striking resemblance to the process responsible for its creation. Global lockdowns prevented the usual access in person to archives and libraries but Professor Rex tapped into an extensive network of colleagues and allies to achieve this edition. Richard Rex has given us one of the most salubrious artifacts to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.
